Local Area / Activities

Known as the rose capital of France, the town of Doue La Fountaine is just 4 kilometres from the accommodation. The region has been exporting roses since the 18th century and is apparently thought of within Europe as the number one producer of these flowers. Also, within 3 kms is the Bioparc of Doue la Fontaine, a zoo based in a sedimentary prehistoric rock quarry, allowing the animals natural habitats.

Both Angers and Saumur are attractive riverside locations and together with their beautiful medieval Chateaux, Chateau d’Angers and Chateau de Saumur, are a must to visit.

Around the Saumur area are many underground passages carved into the rock. It is thought these were partly due to the search for stone to build the region’s chateaux. You can visit the tunnels and may find that some have been cleverly converted into art galleries, restaurants or wine cellars. The largest of the troglodyte villages in the Loire can be found at Rochemenier (between Angers and Saumur), with more than 20 rooms.
