General Description

Set in the rolling landscape of the Charente region of south west France, bordered by meadows and sunflower fields, you will find Le Cerisier, a stone Charentaise house with its spectacular wisteria and rose covered arbour leading to the main entrance, the pool, beautiful gardens and cherry tree orchard, where the house gets its name, Le Cerisier.

A warm welcome awaits you from the owners with complimentary drinks on arrival and an array of visit and sport recommendations and an at-home menu board with suggestions for dining during your stay or perhaps you would just like to quietly while away the summer by the pool. The choice is yours.

The charming 18th century house has its origins as the Abbots residence in this small country village and is set behind a private gated entrance. There is parking for two small cars and plenty of parking outside the property around the quiet village green. If you require covered parking, please enquire with the owners. Through the box tree gardens there is the sunny pool area and shaded sitting places beneath the trees to read and relax. Al fresco eating on the terrace offers a delightful and peaceful place to barbecue and sip a chilled glass of local Charentais wine as you look across the orchard and wild flower meadow beyond.

The house is elegantly furnished in a country French style with original 19th century features. The house is spacious with 3 double bedrooms, 2 bathroom/shower rooms, separate toilet downstairs and large living room / diner with wooden floors and original fireplace with wood burning stove. There is a separate kitchen with French doors to the terrace.

Kitchen: The bright kitchen/ diner is very well equipped with coffee machine, dishwasher, gas hob & large oven and glass and crockery for much more than 6 persons. Small chest freezer.
Living Rooms: Large light filled living-dining room leading on to the kitchen and French doors to the terrace. Cool in the summer.
Other Rooms: Downstairs laundry room within the toilet & shower room
Linen/Cleaning/Towels etc: There is no extra charge for linen or towels. However, if you would like to bring your own pool and bath towels there will be a £10 per person discount. Please advise the owners at the booking stage.
Outside: French doors from the kitchen lead to the terrace which looks on to the pool and private lawn. The partly covered terrace has a table and chairs for 6 people for al fresco eating. The pool has a sliding cover for shade or sun as you prefer and extends the use of the pool in spring and autumn. The pool is equipped with pool loungers and pool towels. There is a small room with fitness machine. The main entrance has a formal box tree pergoda covered in grape vine and wisteria which leads to the front door. There is parking for two cars within the grounds and unlimited parking outside the gate. The house is situated in small village with your daily baguette available from the bar/grocers/ dépôt de pain which is 2 minutes walk from the house. The back of the house is surrounded by views of orchards and meadows.
Additional notes (if any): The owners have 30 years experience in hospitality and as chefs in London, France and Switzerland and propose at-home dining suggestions for your stay, such as Breakfast Baskets, Picnics, First Night Suppers or Barbecue Platters with accompanying Salads & Desserts. Order in advance for the First Night Suppers and during your stay with 24 hours notice. Please ask for our suggestions when you book your stay.

Local Area / Activities

The village has a general store/bar/petrol station within walking distance and 2.5km away is the local baker and simple French restaurant. Mansle is 5 km from the house with the magnificent Charente river and bridge, kayak & canoe point, supermarkets and camping facilities. There are many local food markets and summer entertainments including horse trotting races at the hippodrome and weekly vintage bric-a-bracs in the surrounding villages.

Trains from Luxé link to Angoulême, Bordeaux and Poitiers; the latter having cross connections to Paris, Bordeaux and Brussels. The nearest airports are Limoges and Poitiers at approximately 1 hour drive and Bordeaux airport is 1hr 45.

The area is surrounded by a country steeped in history, wine and food. Cognac and Bordeaux being the most famous with vineyards making up the most of the southern Charente landscape. Visits to the grand Cognac houses are available and trips to the seaside (1h30 by car) where you can visit the quirky Île de Ré and the charming Île d’Oléron and taste the local oysters in cafes next to the sea.
