There are many wonderful activities for families in this part of south-western France with the delights of the Dordogne so close as well as incredible villages and natural landscapes to explore.

Hiring canoes or kayaks on the river Dordogne is a must for water lovers with a centre just a 15-minute drive away, close to Lacave. For even more adventurous teens, the region also offers the perfect territory for rock-climbing.

The caves are also wonderful to visit with children - Gouffre de Padirac, for example, offers tours including a boat trip on an underground river, accessed via lots of steps (but a lift takes you back up!). The replica Lascaux IV, dedicated to the pre-historic art in the original caves at Lascaux, is also fascinating and worthy of a day out.

As well as walking, horse-riding and cycling, not to mention idyllic villages and historic towns, there are also family attractions such as Quercyland, a fun waterpark in Souillac, and La Forêt des Singes near Rocamadour where you can see free roaming monkeys.

Also look out for Le Petit Train de Rocamadour, a little tourist road train that is perfect if you are visiting this popular cliffside village with very young guests during some of the spring/summer months.
