General Description

This beautifully renovated manor house a short walk from a glorious sandy beach in rural west Brittany offers the perfect holiday location for families or groups of 6-12 people. Set in grounds of 3,000m2, Kervigen Manor House retains its classic character, with impressive granite façade and original features, while delivering high-standard fully modernised accommodation. Kervigen easily sleeps up to 12 on three floors, while remaining cozy for smaller groups.

Nearby is the glorious Kervigen beach, only a short 500m walk from the house, and flanked by the Breton coastal path. The small town of Plomodiern is 4km by road, and boasts a selection of shops, including a good-sized supermarket, and a Michelin-starred restaurant. Above Plomodiern lies the mountain of Menez Hom, part of the Parc d’Amorique, with perhaps the best views in Brittany. From here you can see as far as Brest to the north, Chateaulin to the east, Locronan and Quimper to the south and the magnificent Douarnenez Bay, flanked by Pointe du Raz and the Crozon Peninsular, to the west.

Kervigen is the perfect location for families and groups to enjoy a classic beach holiday or a spring or autumn break, to sample the delights of French and Breton culture, and to explore the many and varied attractions of this beautiful and unspoilt area.

Guest reviews:

*****  "What a fantastic house that is well equipped to a high standard! Great facilities and enough space to accommodate 13 of us! We've loved the beach and had many early morning swims and enjoyed the shallowness of the water and the size of the waves! The house is perfect for trips to Brest, Quimper, Locronan, Concarneau and Benodet!"

*****  “Charming, idyllic, great location – the best holiday we’ve ever been on thank you. The beach is great for kids wanting to paddle in the pools, and within easy walking distance.”

*****  “Beautifully restored manor house set in neat and tidy grounds in a peaceful and tranquil location. Very well equipped and provision of showers / bathrooms very impressive with oodles of hot water. Written information – both pre-trip and in the house - was very comprehensive and useful. Overall 9/10.”

*****  “My seven year old grandson described it as ‘epic’ – what more can I say.”

Outside: Kervigen Manor House sits on around 3,000m2 of land, of which around half is the playing area/sports field at the rear of the property.

Front Courtyard
The sheltered front courtyard is a sun trap through most of the morning, with shady corners and a tangible sense of the farm’s working past.

Running alongside the house from front to back is a large traditional tall barn, or hangar, which provides covered parking for several cars.

Rear Gardens
The large enclosed rear gardens surround a low-walled terrace, and receives the sun for most of the day, and early evening. The sloping lawns are ideal for relaxation should the 500m walk to the beach seem too far.

The walled terrace backs directly onto the kitchen, and catches the early evening sunshine beautifully.

Sports Field
Behind the long barn is a large enclosed grassy area ideal for football and other games.

Kervigen Beach
Only 500m from the manor house lies Kervigen Beach, a glorious expanse of flat sand bordered by tempting rock pools, and sheltered on both sides by cliffs.

Guest quotes:

***** "The garden and field at the rear were good for ball games and the barbecue/patio area also a great space for eating and relaxing."

***** "The long barn was ideal for the children and they had a wonderful time in there, as well as on the field."
Additional notes (if any): Kervigen Manor House dates from 1847, and was previously renovated in 1946 - both dates are visible above the front door, along with the inscription: “FAIT PAR HERVE PICLET MARIE POUDOULEC ANNE 1847”

The farm was in the hands of the same family for over 500 years, until the sale of the property to the current owners in 2010. The original farmhouse is still standing, to the left of the main house.

The latest sympathetic renovation was completed in 2012, and included removing the old concrete ground floor and most of the interior walls, and adding an exterior door and rear-facing window to the kitchen, and new windows to the attic rooms. The house was completely re-wired, plumbed and insulated, and full central heating installed. Four shower/bath rooms and a separate toilet represent a significant upgrade from the original facilities.

Guest quotes:

***** “An excellent house for families with different age groups. Beaches close by and safe.”

***** “The beaches are absolutely amazing - the grandchildren had never seen a starfish before, and none of us had seen one that was 40cm wide!”

***** “The house is great. Well laid out, spacious and plenty of room for our two families to have our own space when we wanted. The bathrooms are fantastic - lovely that we all had our own, including the children. The garden and field at the rear were good for ball games and the barbecue/patio area also a great space for eating and relaxing.”

***** “We would definitely recommend your beautiful house to friends, and can’t wait to return ourselves.”

Local Area / Activities

This area of west Brittany has retained a fine balance between respecting cultural traditions and catering for visitors. While it remains relatively unspoilt compared to the more touristy centres on the south coast, there are still plenty of attractions to keep people of all ages interested and occupied.

Towns and Villages

Quimper is the local capital, dominated by its impressive cathedral, surrounded by the narrow streets of the old city. Glorious for a crêpe lunch and a slow wander around the shops and boutiques, a range of museums and a strong cultural heritage make a visit to Quimper a delight.

Nearer at hand is the historical granite village of Locronan, 10km from Kervigen, and famous for its summer evening markets. The waterfront at Douarnenez boasts a good selection of restaurants and bars, catering for all ages and tastes.

Most of the other small towns and villages in the area, including nearby Plomodiern, offer something unique, and typically a festival at some stage during the summer.

Being so close to the sea, the delights of the local beaches are for many visitors the number one attraction. Whether for body-surfing, sailing (on land or sea), fishing, building sand-castles, paddling or playing football, these are some of the very best beaches in Brittany.

Elsewhere other options include fishing, cycling, go-karting, golf, horse riding, kayaking, paint-balling, sailing (land and sea) and many more.

For a more relaxed approach, especially for dog owners, the area boasts some of the finest walks in France, including the coastal path, which can be picked up at Kervigen Beach, and the glorious Armorique national park.

Further afield is the historic naval city of Brest, with its world-famous marine aquarium, and to the south the walled city of Concarneau, always a delight to visit.
