General Description

Bumblebee Cottage has been fully renovated to a high standard and offers a traditional taste of France with all its furnishings but also offers extreme coziness and practicality. It has a well equipped kitchen, two large shower rooms, a spacious lounge/dining room and a separate sitting room.  A double bedroom and a shower room downstairs makes it suitable for those of limited ability.

The stone-built cottage was once a farmhouse and is attached to its barn, which is no longer in use, and gives it the air of a traditional French longère with its water pump in front – it works but we wouldn’t recommend drinking the water!

At the end of a lane that only serves two other properties it is both private and quiet, and the garden, about three quarters of an acre, has lots of room for the children to run around in or play ball games. There are swings and an above ground pool.   There are apple and pear trees and a ferocious bramble patch down at the bottom corner (help yourself if they are ripe).

Accommodation Facilities

Bedrooms: Two double bedrooms and one single upstairs, one double on the ground floor, a z-bed is kept in the downstairs bedroom should it be needed for an extra guest. The downstairs bedroom is reached through the sitting room (the sitting room has French doors on the front of the cottage)
Bathrooms: Large spa shower, handbasin and wc in both upstairs and downstairs bathrooms, towels provided
Kitchen: Fully equipped kitchen, washing machine, dishwasher, microwave, toaster, slow cooker etc. gas hob/electric oven, fridge/freezer.
Living Rooms: Large lounge with log fire (all rooms also have electric heaters) comfortably furnished with two sofas, a large armchair and footstool, very cosy in front of the fire!
The tv has Freesat and there's a dvd player and a selection of dvds.
Typical of rural France the dining table is also here.
Other Rooms: There is an airy, light sitting room reached from the lounge which also has external access via double doors, and provides access to the downstairs bedroom
Linen/Cleaning/Towels etc: Bed linen (including for the z-bed) is provided as are towels.
For the cot, one only cot sheet, duvet cover and pillowcase are provided.
The cottage is self catering and a cleaning service is not provided unless specifically requested in advance
Outside: There is a decked area with a permanent BBQ (no smoke in the eyes when cooking!) and a large table and benches with a permanent awning. Adjacent to this are the swings, and a little further into the garden a second decked area and the pool.
The garden is about 3/4 acre, there is a goal net there (bring your own ball, the foxes keep stealing ours), plenty of room for children to let off steam and older ones could camp, there's a tent hanging in the bathroom downstairs.
There is a paved area at the front door, ideal for morning coffee.
Parking is on the graveled area to the front of the cottage.
Additional notes (if any): There is a travel cot and high chair for babies and safety gate and bed guard available for the slightly older ones.
We don't claim to be wheelchair friendly as the internal doorways aren't extra wide, but with the downstairs bedroom and bathroom it's suitable for those with limited mobility.
There's broadband available, it's slow and the bandwidth is limited (so please don’t download movies) as we're too far from the telephone exchange to have cable.

Local Area / Activities

The tiny village of Saint Clement is only a couple of minutes drive away (we've never actually seen anyone there!) and the small market town of Mortain is just five minutes away where there are couple of bars, cafes, supermarkets and shops. In addition just five minutes down the road is a great Go-cart Track which is popular for both children and adults.

The Abbaye Hotel in nearby Le Neufbourg is run by an English couple and combines French and English cuisine, and does excellent Sunday lunches - advance booking is advisable.

Cyclists and walkers are well catered for two km from the cottage is a disused railway line (ample parking there), which is now a cycleway and runs for miles.

Above Mortain the view from the hilltop (La Petite Chapelle) is huge, fading into the misty distance, there’s a pleasant walk and picnic area there and on a clear day it's possible to see Mont St Michel.

The area wasn’t so peaceful in 1944, there was a major battle at La Petite Chapelle and German campaign maps show SS Panzers advancing from Ger (about 12 km away) down the lane to the cottage and through the garden, there's a tank sized gap in the bocage in the bottom corner behind the bramble patch, someday we'll investigate it.

Le Village Enchante, an activity park, is about 10km away with lot's to do for children, and a death slide for older childen and adults.

A about 45 minutes away is a zoo, at Jurques, and to the North, about an hour and a half, are the Normandy D-day beaches and the little village of St Maire Eglise, the first place in France liberated, with an excelent liberation museum  - they have a dummy of a parachutist on the church tower to commemorate the actual event.
