An island idyll nestled in the Mediterranean Sea, Mallorca is a beautiful location to take a break. One of Spain’s treasured Balearic Islands, Mallorca has been enthralling visitors for decades, and it’s easy to see why tourists flock to the golden shores in their droves.
Mallorca’s incredible attractions
Mallorca is a popular beach holiday destination, but it has something to offer everyone. If you can bear to tear yourself away from your sun lounger, you’ll find a host of impressive attractions and some fun-packed activities on offer. Palma, the enigmatic capital city, is a wonderful place to while away a few hours. A cosmopolitan city, it boasts everything from exclusive beach clubs and bars to a stunning cathedral, which dates back to the 1300’s. Nearby Palau de l'Almudaina is also well worth a visit. A beautiful nod to the island’s Moorish heritage, this sprawling palace started life as a fort. Other places of interest on the island include Cuevas del Drach, a mysterious network of underground caverns, Bellver Castle and Palma Aquarium. Children will also love the giant Hidropark water park in the popular resort of Alcudia.
If you’re a foodie, you’ll be spoiled for choice when it comes to eating out in Mallorca. There is a strong Spanish influence, and you’ll find plenty of cafes and restaurants serving up tapas throughout the day and classic dishes such as paella. Seafood is also widely available, so don’t miss out on the catch of the day. Vegetables play a very important role in Mallorcan cuisine, which is famed for being healthy and fresh. Look out for dishes that contain locally-produced Ramellet tomatoes.
There’s plenty to keep you busy in Mallorca. You’ll find a dazzling array of water sports available at the most popular resorts of Alcudia, Palma, Cala Nova and Santa Ponsa, and you can also get your pulses racing with off-road island tours and speedboat trips. Hire a jet ski or a kayak or stay on dry land and take a hike. If you’re feeling energetic, there are also some excellent mountain biking routes, which afford amazing sea views.
Mallorca enjoys a pleasant Mediterranean climate, with warm summers and mild winters. In the summer months, the mercury can rise to over 30 degrees, while temperatures rarely fall into single figures even in the depths of winter. July and August are the most popular times to visit, but you’re almost guaranteed sunshine between May and October. The wettest months are November to February, with an average of 5 rainy days per month. Due to the fact that you’re never too far from the coast wherever you are on the island, you can also enjoy a refreshing breeze to keep you cool when the sun is beating down.
If you’re thinking of travelling to Mallorca, you won’t be disappointed. This is a destination that truly has it all. From glistening golden beaches and quaint mountain villages to ancient churches and castles and adventure parks, you’ll never get bored of magical Mallorca.
