Holiday Rentals in North West France
North West France
The north west of France is made up of three regions which have all played very different historical roles, from the royal heartland of the Pays de la Loire, to separatist Celtic Brittany and the conquering region of Normandy.
The region has a coastline riddled with wonderful little sandy bays and dotted with fishing ports, which marks out the north west corner of France. To the west the landscape is rockier and rougher and defines the rugged peninsula of Brittany. To the east the landscape sweeps more generously with the sandy holiday resorts of Normandy.
Inland from the sheltered bays and picturesque harbours, which yield an abundance of fish and seafood, you will find an ancient land of legends to the west, with small traditional communities and intriguing parish closes and to the east the rolling rich farmland of Normandy famous for its cheese, apples and pears. The Pays de la Loire is defined by the Loire river and the end of the Loire valley with its sumptuous chateaux and famous wines.
To the east of the region is the thriving historic Normandy capital city of Rouen, which straddles the River Seine, with its Gothic cathedral and Joan of Arc history, which makes it a fascinating place to explore. To the west is the Breton capital of Rennes with its mixture of ancient timbered houses and grand 18th century architecture. To the south is Nantes on the Loire river and the largest city in the Pays de la Loire.
With a good road network and easy access to the main channel ports, the north west area of France is a popular holiday destination.
