Poulmarvezen is at the end of a very pretty lane, there is no passing traffic, so it is very quiet and tranquil. Each cottage has its own exclusive area of garden and share a large pool. There is a woodland walk leading to a stream and picnic area. La Ferme Fortifié was the original fortified manor farmhouse built in the late 1600's at Poulmarvezen. It has a stone spiral staircase in a tower with a "meutrier", (a gunslit), there is a massive stone Breton fireplace, (complete with woodburning stove for cosy winter lets) and many other interesting exposed stonework details.
The property has been restored to a very high standard with three en-suite bedrooms (two doubles and one twin) on the first floor, accessed via the stone spiral staircase, and on the ground floor an enormous (37 feet long) open plan living/dining/kitchen area. The original massive oak beams have been left exposed, including those in the three bedrooms and the upstairs landing. The exposed timberwork and stonework is shown to its best by the contrasting white walls and the rose-coloured ceramic tile floor on the ground floor, and tasteful neutral carpeting throughout the bedroom areas.
The villages of Ploerdut and Lignol are each three kilometres distant and offer restaurants, bars and boulangeries. Guemène-sur-Scorff is ten minutes away by car and offers supermarkets, banks, a wider range of shops, and even more restaurants.
The area is ideal for walking, cycling, fishing, painting and drawing, photography, not to mention eating, and there is a multitude of interesting places to visit within half an hours drive, including the mysterious Chapelle St. Barbe (ring the massive bell), St. Fiacre, Le Faouet market hall, Les Rochers Du Diable (white water kayaking), the pretty Vallee-du-Scorff (picnic here), the Lac de Guerladan (boating from a tree-shaded beach), and many local street markets, notably Hennebont, Rostrenen, and further afield Vannes on a Wednesday, all ideal for gourmets and photographers. The picturesque, rugged coastline of Southern Brittany with its sandy beaches and coves is 40 kilometres away. There are many markets to visit selling delicious fresh vegetables and fruits with wonderful cheese stalls, local bread and much more.
