Set in the heart of the Cevennes National Park in the Gard Region of the Languedoc-Roussillon, this sympathetically renovated 200 year old farmhouse is believed to once belong to the Chateau. It is set in extensive terraced natural grounds in complete privacy. 15 minute walk to village of Portes. Escape to your perfect holiday retreat in the beautiful, rolling countryside of the Cevennes, a stunning but little known part of the South of France, yet only 1.5 hours from the Mediterranean and 1 hour's picturesque drive from Nimes Airport. This part of France is renowned for Robert Louis Stevenson's travels and his subsequent book "Travels with a Donkey" which recounts his exploits.
The village of Portes, famous for its Chateau is situated only 15 minutes walk from the house and is open to the public. In Portes you will find a bar/cafe, a bakery for your fresh bread, pains au chocolat, croissants as well as pizzas, etc. and the excellent, good-value restaurant, Le Relais du Chateau. The house is secluded but not isolated and only a minute's drive from the main road. There is a lockable barrier at the top and access is private. Both the buildings you will see belong to us.
Mas des Grailles is situated in the Cevennes National Park in the Gard region of the Languedoc-Roussillon. The town of Ales is the gateway to the Cevennes and a good base for discovering this still wild and uncultivated area. The hills of the Cevennes are well known for their spectacular views, scenic routes and quiet narrow lanes, chestnut groves, valleys and crystal-clear streams for wonderful swimming. Portes is just 15 minutes drive north from the town of Ales towards Genolhac on the D906. Nimes, with its stunning Roman amphitheatre is only 45 minutes away and other spectacular cities such as Avignon, Montpellier, Uzes, Arles, Le Pont du Gard (to visit and swim in the river), the Camargue and Orange (well worth a trip to the opera).
The Camargue and Le Grau du Roi at the Mediterranean are all within 1.5 hours drive. For shopping, you have the choice of Chamborigaud or La Grand'Combe, both only 10 minutes away. Chamborigaud has a railway station (trains to Ales and Genolhac with connection to Paris), post office, two or three grocery shops, an artisanal bakery, gift shop and newsagent, bars, a Logis de France hotel and restaurant and two or three other restaurants.
